Masamichi Ueno is a professor of Education at Sophia University, Japan. Ueno has been involved in the research of philosophyof democratic citizenship and education. His study also focuses on educational theories and school practices in East Asia. He currently serves as a visiting professor at Shandong Normal University and Northwest University, China and is a president of the Institute of East Asian Education. He is the author of Education for Democracy: Beyond Cynicism of Learning (The University of Tokyo Press, 2013), Democratic Education and the Public Sphere: Towards John Dewey’s Theory of Aesthetic Experience (Routledge, 2016), Manabi and Japanese Schooling: Beyond Learning in the Era of Globalisation (Routledge, 2020), and School Reform and Democracy in East Asia (Routledge, 2021).
